Day 182: Kakuakos Lodge – Calandula Falls

Wolle is not feeling well. Maybe another cold, maybe not enough rest, hopefully not the first signs of malaria. The fact that the symptoms of all the travelers we have met who had malaria were so different is a bit confusing.

We continue on anyway, even though we know that we probably won't have such a good campsite until Tsumeb. Thanks to Luis and Juliette!

Today's destination is the Calandula Falls. With a height of 105 m, the fall is one of the largest in Africa in terms of water volume. Since it is still the rainy season in Angola, the water is rushing down in incredible quantities.

Once again it took us longer than expected to cover the 379 km. Since a bridge is broken on the main route to the south, all long-distance traffic is also struggling to take the supposed shortcut. Pothole after pothole and that really means pothole – if you get into it and aren't moving as slowly as a snail, the tire will take a hard hit!

We meet Ramona and Lukas again at the Pousada Lodge. And there are also Veronica and Bernd, who live in Namibia. A parking lot with a view of the falls – wonderful.

Since it's late again and wet on all sides, we decide to use the restaurant. When we finally get our delicious grilled chicken (yes, always chicken!) at half past eight, we are actually totally tired and Wolle is really feeling bad. Off to bed. We'll stay here tomorrow.

A footnote about chickens: We have often wondered where all the chickens that are eaten in West Africa actually come from. Jan in Vigoureux told us that everything from South America that KFC no longer takes for quality reasons is exported to Africa. So far we have survived...
