Day 129: Biriwa Beach Ressort – Cape Coast
Cape Coast. Visit to the castle, which has an eventful history of various colonial powers. Up to 2,000 male and 1,000 female slaves were held captive in dungeons here under inhumane conditions until they were shipped to the “new” world. The excrement and rotting corpses are knee-deep. You walk across a floor covered by a layer of excrement that has solidified over the centuries. The original floor was only exposed in one basement room. Above the dungeons is the church. (In Elmina Castle, the ballroom towered above the dungeons.)
Terrible. Even if you “actually” know about the history, the presence of the place takes your breath away. And the words.
The nice part of the day: We meet Almut and Simon again in Cape Coast and spend the day together, including a really delicious vegetarian lunch with dessert (chocolate cake with ice cream!) in the Baobab restaurant.
It's wonderful to spend a day chatting together!
In the evening we drive back to Biriwa Beach Resort and – what a great surprise – Domi and Lio are there.
