Day 24: Camping SurEuropa (nearby La Linea) – Camping Echrigui (in Asilah)
The second morning with an alarm clock, phew. But we really have to leave at 9:00 to get to the ferry. In fact, it always takes us around two hours to shower, eat breakfast, wash up and pack up. Strange feeling eating breakfast in the dark. But getting up early is rewarded with a great dawn.
Everything works fine until boarding, but then unfortunately there is water coming in from above – something or someone has triggered a sprinkler system. We're dry, but the departure is delayed.
The ferry then cruises at a snail's pace the approximately 34 km from Algeciras to Tanger Med and the swell of the ship sounds more like gentle surf. However, you only benefit to a limited extent from the beautiful weather and the wide view because you have to wait in the long queue for entry formalities to Morocco.
Passport check, face check, comparison of passport with the “fiche”, stamp on the fiche, stamp in the passport, personal number on the fiche, personal number in the passport.
On land they take another look at the passports, then we arrive at customs.
Wolle has to hand in his passport and vehicle registration, Brigitte's passport is of no interest. Open the car completely and let the dogs in. The drugs are more likely to be exported than imported, we thought.
Then at some point the passport will be returned. Do we have anything to declare? For some unknown reason the rear has to be opened again. We also receive a business card-sized piece of paper that we have to hand back when we leave the country. Don't loose! Finally we are done!
Then you can change money a little further if necessary and get a SIM card (which we do both) and then the next check point. Look at the vehicle registration document and the passports.
We take the highway to Assilah, where there is a large campsite where we can stay even without a reservation.
The Atlantic welcomes us with good surf. You could throw yourself into the spray, you could also ride a camel or a horse on the beach, but a walk is enough for us today.
We explore the place a little more, which turns out to be nicer and, at a late hour, busier than expected and finally eat the seafood paella that we missed in Spain. For dessert, caramel pudding and peppermint tea – we had almost forgotten how sugary and yet delicious it is.
