Day 185: Pedras Negras – Fazenda Rio Uiri

From the Pedras Negras we continue via Quibala and Gabela to the Fazenda Rio Uiri. Next to the desert in Mauritania, today is our most scenic driving day of the trip.

Beautiful mountain landscapes, wide and always new views. Every five minutes “oh look there” and every fifteen minutes “stop for a photo”. Overwhelming. What a wealth for this country if it were more developed for tourism.

Towards the late afternoon rain starts to pour and we begin to understand why the roads are literally falling apart. The water gushes left and right and across the street, dragging soil with it, hollowing out small holes, forming whirlpools, developing power through the sheer volume.

On the fazenda there is a parking area for us (and the Swiss) and dinner in a large hall. Buffet with, among other things, mashed potatoes and small meatball-like dumplings. We both throw ourselves into it, just the right thing for our battered bodies. And the semifreddo for dessert almost brings tears to our eyes – so delicious!
