Day 49: Atar – Terjid (Camping Auberge Caravan)
We woke up early and managed to make yesterday's diary entry. Today we leisurely go to Terjid and on to M’Heireth.
Spectacular landscapes and then a drive through a palm grove in M’Heireth – wonderful. Of course, let out some air first. Sand. There is a water pool a little south of the town – Wolle jumps in, like two young Americans before him (why is Mauritania on their travel list alongside Poland, Italy and France? Because of a YouTube video!).
We take a lunch break; the two Americans get something prepared by the guides and we are given a wonderfully tasting flatbread. At almost 40 degrees and without shade we hike the dry riverbed. At some point Brigitte becomes exhausted and looks for a shady rocky outcrop. Wolle continues until the second pool of water – just great.
By the time we get back to Terjid, it's late again. Quick note: Chez Jamal is not suitable for cars, so we'll stick with Auberge Caravan. And shortly after us, Cathrine and Ian arrive there.
Btw.: Today we had our first encounter with a police officer who actively asked for a gift. We had cookies in our mouths when we arrived at the checkpoint and offered the bag out of politeness. The officer grabbed not just one cookie but five or six and then the question follows whether we have a pen and whether he can keep it. He can't because we don't have many pens with us. He is slightly annoyed, but of course lets us drive on. This was just a small thing, but somehow it is also about the principle.
And unfortunately in this area, where more tourists come, all the children also ask for a gift.
