Day 151: Great Zimbabwe – Romelda Lakeside Retreat
This morning we climb the older mountain ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Wonderful, it's not that hot yet, the visibility isn't too hazy, and we're alone. That's the advantage of spending the night at the (very dilapidated) campsite on the grounds of the National Monument.
The stone walls are just as impressive as at the "Great Enclosure" in the valley, but the way the walls and rocks fit together is also interesting here. The whole thing is a labyrinth.
We make a detour to the museum, where eight steles with bird replicas are particularly impressive. The history of the artifacts is interesting. One, for example, made its way via Germany, Leningrad, and back, and one was owned by Cecil Rhodes for a long time.
Unfortunately, our tire is still losing air, so we have to go to Masvingo. We're in with 5 USD, hoping that's it. We won't know until tomorrow...
A little further east, we find a peaceful spot at the Romelda Lakeside Retreat on Lake Mutirikwi. Besides us, two other South Africans, Mary-Ann and Neil, are there.
