Day 80: Flower and Fern – Kalambo Falls – Flower and Fern
Using the Starlink connection before we leave. We're finalizing our reservation for a gorilla trek in Uganda! July 12th, Rushaga Sector, Bwindi National Park. Hopefully, everything works out...
We ultimately had three options. We decided against Mgahinga National Park because there's only one gorilla family there. We might have seen golden monkeys, but it's somehow too risky for us. The Rushaga Sector is home to the most habituated gorilla families and is easily accessible by car. There's a campsite near the gate, we can pay in cash in dollars, and we don't have to charge our credit card in advance – everything seems to work best for us here.
By the way, the AI helped us get a quick introduction to the topic. Who would have thought a few years ago that you could get good text summaries to help you make decisions by Googling in Zambia?
We chat a bit with Brad, who is a really nice and helpful host.
And then we head to our last waterfall in Zambia, Kalambo Falls. The water plunges 235 m into the depths, quite impressive. We don't want to spend the night here, though; we're simply too spoiled by the Flowers and Fern Farm. So we just stroll around the viewpoints and take a few photos, and are back at the car after half an hour. And that's precisely why we didn't pay the full $35 fee.
On the way there, we stopped at the Casamunji Coffee Shop and Bistro in Mbala. We only found it with Brad's help; it's located in the area around the bus station. A fun place, a delicious burger. After we'd already driven all over town looking for something, hardly anyone noticed us on the way back. And even at a police checkpoint, they recognized us and waved us through.
And so we spent our last night in Zambia on the farm again. We arrived on May 15th and we're moving on tomorrow – we've spent 35 truly wonderful days here.
