Day 155: Gonarezhou NP: Tondo – Mabalauta
Crossing the park from north to south on the so-called Transit Route is rather uninteresting, even though the landscape changes occasionally.
Mabalauta Camp is close to the southern gate – we are the only guests today. The "River View" is quite overgrown, but that doesn't matter, as there's absolutely nothing going on along the river.
We take a short trip to the Makwakwani Platform (which can be booked as an overnight spot; highly recommended) and unfortunately, upon arrival, scare away a family of elephants from the water. The animals are all incredibly shy! And we suspect that there is still a lot of poaching going on.
We also hear that the fence in the park is for the protection of the rhinos; the border with Mozambique is too close… And once again, the Frankfurt Zoological Society is involved, and we commemorate Bernhard Grzimek.
