Day 75: Lumangwe Falls / Kabweluma Falls
It's crazy to sleep right next to such a roaring waterfall. You can almost feel the vibrations of the impact.
We set out on foot to explore Kabweluma Falls. The trail leads through bush and sparse forest and is quite easy to walk until we reach a grassy, swampy area, where Brigitte unfortunately gets her feet wet. So we make our way about 600 meters through the bush to the track – in Austria, they would call it a forest path.
The falls are once again very impressive because they are completely different. In two sections, the water rushes directly into the depths, and one section consists of two cascades. The river carries a truly enormous amount of water, and we wonder where it actually comes from... We've read that Zambia has around 45% of southern Africa's water capacity. Northeastern Zambia also feeds the Nile and Congo Rivers as a source.
The return journey takes a bit of a while, especially since we don't see anything other than butterflies. At one point, something rustles up a palm tree – maybe a monkey, who knows. We've covered just under 16 km, and given our current out-of-shape status, we're completely exhausted by the afternoon. A cold shower, a bit of reflection on the next few days and Tanzania, a fire, a quick meal, and bed.
