Day 100: Nyore Hillside Retreat – Äquator – Enjojo Lodge and Campsite
We're going to the equator!
After crossing the equator overland in Congo Brazzaville in March 2024, we now have to go there again. We somehow think it's crazy ourselves.
A quick selfie session with a school class and three elderly Indian gentlemen, a lunch break, and then we head south again. The equator is the U-turn of the trip.
The landscape today is varied and truly beautiful. Just a little hazy, unfortunately.
At the beginning, we drive through banana plantations, coffee plantations, and tea plantations. Reforested trees stand in rows, and we know from the west coast that they are cut down when they're just right for, say, a power pole.
We reach Queen Elizabeth National Park (which you can cross for free on some roads) and are surprised because we see more savannah and less forest and jungle than we expected. It looks beautiful. And even here in the savannah, we keep seeing elephants.
South of the equator, we drive through the park on a secondary road. The landscape changes, becoming more wooded and mutating into a jungle, just like we saw a few thousand kilometers further west in Congo Brazzaville. By the way: We're pretty close to the border with Congo Kinshasa.
The first campsite we come to (Kisenyi Lake Retreat Campsite) isn't particularly appealing. At least, the name suggests otherwise... Besides, it's still early. So we continue on to Enjojo Lodge and Campsite. It's actually too expensive (15 pppn, cold shower, no electricity), but it does have a restaurant. And we like the pampering program :-)
