Day 42: Rupara Restcamp – Nkasa Rupara National Park

We slept well and were awake at 6:30. Since everyone around us was up early, we had breakfast while the sun was rising behind the trees.

We can take our time today at Nkasa Rupara National Park; we're staying at camp for a second night.

We're registered at the gate, the park is explained to us, and we sign a waiver confirming we understand all the rules. Then we go to the park administration (the little house is sponsored by Germany), where we pay the park fees. That way, at least two people have work to do.

The warning that the tracks can change depending on the season and weather conditions (i.e., flooding of the plains), and that you can't always drive on everything, turns out to be completely true. It's a case of searching, turning around, finding...

The landscape is beautiful, and we see:

An incredible number of warthogs. Impalas and red lechwes (related to the pukas of the Busanga Plains), kudus, and only a single wildebeest. Three zebras, about eight elephants. More than a dozen hippos in the water and two in the distance on land. A large croc and small ones. Great cranes (we still need to identify them more precisely). Lots of hornbills and blue starlings. A few interesting fruits and berries.

We spent a whole day cruising around the area and returned happily to our campsite in the late afternoon. There are only four other people here today – our paths had crossed several times in the park, too.

What peace, what pleasure. By the way: It's a full moon today.
