Day 28: Windhoek – Ghaub Nature Reserve and Farm (nearby Grootfontein)
Here we go. Finally! 23 days later than expected. But what the heck...
Our first stop on the way north is Ghaub Nature Reserve and Farm. At 40 Euros per night, it's a bit pricey, but conveniently located for us and surrounded by nature – we want to get out of the city.
The nearby Tsumeb was also a nice stopover, but it's too cold for the pool with the 50m lap at the Kupferquelle Resort anyway :-)
So, something different.
Ghaub is a former mission station from 1895 and the site of the last German battles against the South African Liberation Army. Now a nature reserve, you could book rhino tracking or a tour of a large stalactite cave. We're not doing any of that.
We're more in the mood for a stroll around the farm. We visit an old cemetery and walk through meadows and fields until we're so bitten and annoyed by the mosquitoes that we turn back.
Instead of walking around the mountain, we climb the hill behind our campsite (#2) and enjoy the magnificent view of the valley. And the fresh breeze.
We cook and eat early, then the shower water is warm, and it's worth building a fire.
And: We enjoy a drink with a freshly picked lemon for what must be the first time. Absolutely delicious with a little bitter lemon and plenty of water.
