Day 109: Twee Rivieren – Nossob Rest Camp

In the morning we get a few small things from the Twee Rivieren shop.

We then pick up our permit at the checkpoint and tell them that we are going to Nossob.

When we arrive in Nossob we have to hand our permit back in at reception. If we want to do a game drive here, we have to pick up the permit again and the direction we are going is entered.

A somewhat strange system, but we are used to that in Africa.

The drive along the Nossob river, which of course has no water, is a bit tiring at times. At first you drive on a good gravel road, later on a sandy surface, only rarely with a washboard-like surface. The visibility is only somewhat limited by driving in the river valley. There are trees and bushes, but never so dense that you cannot see into the distance. But there isn't much to see at times: Oryx, Springbok, Red Wildebeest and today especially many larger birds. Then we see three lions taking a siesta right by the road and not far from the Nossob Rest Camp we see three hyenas in a cooling bath, which I at least take later in the swimming pool of the Nossob Rest Camp, because at 42 degrees it really is a welcome way to cool down.

On the campsite there are solid and clean ablutions with a kitchen where we prepare our dinner.

We go to the camp's bird hide and then sit down by our car with a beer and a view of the sunset, but then suddenly strong gusts of wind come up. Even during the day there were small swirls of sand and a few drops of rain. This is now hitting the campsite too and we quickly take down the awning. The storm is blowing around a bit of sand as well as lots of small insects. It's a little spooky and the fact that our South African neighbours suddenly get in their cars and start them up isn't exactly reassuring either, but the wind soon dies down and everything calms down. Let's see how the night goes.
