Day 25: Kasane (Botswana) – Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)
We cross the border into Zimbabwe at Kazungula, our 19th country on this trip in Africa. Leaving Botswana is easy, but entering Zimbabwe is more difficult because TIP/Road Permit/Carbon Tax/Insurance are no longer completely done at the counter, but you have to create a so-called e-Tip in advance. We still have connection and after several attempts it works. 50 US dollars for that, 50 each for the visa (Univisa or Combined Visa for switching between Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days).
We are already in Victoria Falls by noon and drive to the N1 Hotel and Campsite (20 US-Dollars pppn). Our campsite is located quite nicely on the lawn by the pool – but it will be loud. Victoria Falls consists only of places of tourist infrastructure.
A short exploratory walk through the town, accompanied by the noise of helicopters from sightseeing flights and by the talks from small art dealers, who want to sell you something. We spot Carl's motorbike at a car park and the security guards show us the way to Pick'n'Pay. Of course they realize everything :-)
What a wonderful reunion. And how nice that Carl is back on his feet and on the road after his accident in Harare. We spend the rest of the day chatting.
Carl learned a lot about Zimbabwe, the former Rhodesia, during his stay in Harare. We are in a country where the US dollar is the actual currency and, for example, two cappuccinos and a piece of cake cost 10 US-Dollars. Which nobody can afford except tourists. The country still suffers from a weak economy and, above all, from a dysfunctional agriculture after the expropriation of white farmers by Mugabe's government at the turn of the millennium.
