Day 81: Lower Sabie Rest Camp

We hit the trail at around 6:00 and do our rounds for three hours. The light is great in the morning and it is still a little cooler.

We are back for breakfast at around 9:00, then we laze around a bit, do a few little things and visit the pool. In the afternoon we go on safari again.

Sometimes we have good animal sightings in the morning, sometimes not. Sometimes there is nothing going on at all at midday and sometimes the watering holes are well visited and the animals are migrating. In the late afternoon until dusk there is often a lot to see, but today, for example, there was suddenly a very hazy light. We have now come up with the theory that – apart from the light – it almost doesn't matter when you are out and about and that the animals find us and not we the animals. Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time and sometimes you aren't. As quickly as giraffes or elephants appear and disappear, for example, the window of time is often short. So it's all coincidence. Unless you hear of a cat's kill – they stay in one place for a few days.

Actually, today we see the old familiar sights: elephants, giraffes, warthogs, zebras, various antelopes. No rhinos, but hippos and crocs. And a colony of fruit bats on the roof of the reception and shop.

We are thrilled by the landscape, varied and with great views. And the smells and sounds are great too (cicadas reach a whopping 85 decibels).
