Day 21: Muchenje – Ihaha (Chobe)

The Muchenje Lodge and Campsite is really great. Well run with a small shop (which, fortunately, also has bread), nice and practically laid out. Before breakfast, however, we first have to chase away a few vervet monkeys. Clever little guys, if you get too close to them, they hide under the car, knowing very well that you won't reach them there.

In conversation with the operators this morning, the idea of coming back in April next year comes up – it is supposed to be the best time for birdwatching.

Today we continue along the Chobe River to the Ihaha Campsite – just a short distance. In the plain, which has water in the rainy season, large herds of zebras, antelopes, cattle and elephants roam. And then we see a seemingly endless herd of buffalo. We estimate there to be around 500 animals. So impressive. Some of them move past us, but also react to the slightest movement from us. Another part crosses the river to the other side of the water.

In the afternoon we do a game drive in over 40 degrees and spot a lioness with two cubs and a dead zebra. The zebra's tail looks strangely pretty in the scenery of the already chewed animal. The two little ones lie with their bellies and doze, mom is awake.

Our dinner is prepared and eaten rather quickly, as there are simply too many baboons hanging around here – a bit annoying. And so we end up in the car early and are once again grateful that we can sit in it quite comfortably.
