Day 83: Satara Rest Camp – Maroela Campsite

Wow. What a day!

We wake up early (around 5:00) and are still almost the last to leave the site :-)

Today we watch elephants bathing and splashing around and for the first time we see an elephant turn on its side in the water and stretch its feet in the air.

We drive through a herd of buffalo so slowly that the animals can hardly avoid them and are very close to the car.

We take a lunch break in Maroela Camp (at the Orpen Gate) and drive out again in the afternoon for a spin.

And then on the way back, barely 4 km from the camp, we come across a “pride of lions” that blows you away: more than 20 animals! Females, two of them white, young animals, some so small that you could almost call them puppies. They come out of the bushes slowly, walk along the road, lie down now and then, hit the banquette, come back onto the road, and appear right next to the cars.

We take photos, make videos, Leo has his hand on the window lifter. At first there are only three cars, but there are more and more and everyone is overwhelmed.

Our South African camping neighbors also quickly set off on our tip and say that they have never seen anything like it in 30 years.
