Day 70: Mahai Campsite / Royal Natal NP
Breakfast in the sun surrounded by curious birds – we counted nine different species. Is "species" the right term, biologically speaking? It doesn't matter! We hike into the Thukela Gorge. The weather is stable and the path is fun. However: you can't see the waterfall at the end. The ladder up to the right has probably been broken for five years and the ladder up to the left seems to be leading us on a path in the wrong direction.
Later at the Visitors Center we are told that there is a viewpoint up to the left. Two young Frenchmen who continued on from there didn't find it. And a young black man who climbed the broken ladder caught a glimpse of the falls in the distance, but said it was "really hard work".
So just a look into the narrowing canyon and back. Not entirely satisfactory, but definitely good as a workout (around 17 km, around 500 meters of elevation, more than 5 hours).
All it takes is a moment of carelessness after showering and for the first time we have a baboon in the car. He ate the biscuits in no time, even though we had a hard time opening the tin. All the other packaging holds up for a short moment, though, and so he leaves behind only a thick greenish poop sausage as he flees from Wolle :-((. A short time later, the cabin smells pleasantly of disinfectant spray :-))
We are reconciled by some deer grazing on the campsite, which is also only sparsely occupied today.
