Day 50: Mabaka Farm and Campsite in Letlhakane – Khama Rhino Sanctuary
The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is only around 165 km from Letlhakane. Founded in 1992 when there were hardly any rhinos left in Botswana, today both white and black rhinos live here, i.e. white and black rhinos. They are fitted with trackers and monitored around the clock. Black rhinos are threatened with extinction, there are only a dramatically small number left.
When we arrive, we are warned that due to the relocation of some other animals and the associated unrest, we may not see any rhinos because the animals are retreating into the bush.
We are lucky enough to see seven white rhinos on our little tour through the park. Wonderful. And honestly: they just look better with horns. And these ones have really long horns.
By the way, it seems to have rained here last night – we can actually make out which tracks are from today. We're not usually great trackers :-)
The campsite in the park is cosy with large pitches, far apart, so you wouldn't notice much of the others – if there were anyone else there. Today seems to be a rather quiet day. It might be different on weekends – at least the seating in the restaurant suggests that large groups might visit.
We enjoy the campsite, cook, make a fire and enjoy the silence and the full moon.
