Day 51: Khama Rhino Sanctuary – Wondergat

In the morning we have a lot of fun with the birds: the grey "go away" bird, which likes to appear in groups and makes rather bad-tempered sounds. The obligatory Tuku (Yellow Billed Hornbill). And the brown chickens, which usually run away frantically, but here come quite close if you sit still. And last but not least a Crested Barbet, which shows itself in all its colorful glory.

About halfway through we cross the Tropic of Capricorn. Somehow we realize what we have achieved – on the way to South Africa in our own car!

We drive further south towards Gaborone. Around 40 kilometres to the north there is a heavy storm. Gusts, dark clouds, lightning bolts, sandstorm and then finally rain – the first in weeks or even months. In between there is hardly anything to see, but after a few kilometres or around 15 minutes it's over. And it has cooled down to 19 degrees Celsius.

Since we still want to cross the border, we only cross Gaborone, although it actually looks quite inviting.

The Ramatlabama border post (exit Botswana / entry South Africa) is probably our fastest border. Although we have to explain the function of the Carnet de Passage on both sides and the car is checked on both sides (exit: prohibited animals or parts of them or people / at entry vehicle number check), we are through in half an hour! Wow.

The only campsite that is available on the way is "Wondergat", a really nice place with a deep waterhole in which you can dive. However, everything is pretty run down, you don't really want to come into contact with the sanitary facilities. But: there is hot water, at least .-)

The day was long, we eat leftovers and go to bed early.
