Day 46: Powell River - Schoen Lake

We actually slept quite well until the toddlers of the families wake us. But ok, we have breakfast and pack leisurely and ride to the harbor. The ferry to Vancouver Island/Comox leaves in 1.5 hours and so we still have time for a real coffee and a cinnamon roll. The motorcyclist with the dog we met yesterday is visiting the port too, knowing that we want to take the ferry. But since we want to go to the bakery, we don't have time for a chat.

The crossing (1.5 hours) is nice, windy, sunny, calm sea, good view to many mountains and fjords. From Commox we ride to Campbell River. There we stop for some orientation, we do not know exactly if the campsite at Schoen Lake is open due to the wildfires. The women in the tourist office are not the best informed, but it should not be a problem to ride into the park. We take a late lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant (yummy), get some supplies, refuel, the usual program, because there will not be many stores on our way. And here we even find an organic food shop!

The 13 km gravel road ride from the main road #19 into the park are pretty lonely, the forest is a real jungle (only a few clearings), dense and impenetrable. Brigitte is lucky about other people on the 9 sites campground up there. The camping is located really great: middle in a forest, on a lake with views to mountains.

Right at our campsite there are giant trees, some have already broken down. Wolle takes a quick dip in the fairly cool lake.

We spend a nice evening chatting with John and Joni and a father of two sons, who spend a longer holiday here with all the equipment you can imagine (boat, motorcycles, fishing, etc.). Joni offers delicious whiskey and chocolate - very nice.
