Day 36: Þingeyri – Tálknafjörður

We have breakfast in the sunshine. Wow!

With excellent visibility, we head south over the mountain pass again. Then we continue to Dynjandi waterfall. It is truly impressive to see such vast volumes of water cascading down in a broad fan.

Equally impressive – though in a different way – are the crowds of tour buses and tourists gathering here; after all, we had spent the last few days in the quieter corners of the Westfjords.

Just a little further along towards Bildudalur, there is a roadside hot spring with two pools (Reykjarfjarðalaug) – we happily stop there for a quick break.

We also take in the north coast of the Bildudalur peninsula – it’s a striking route offering a great view of the F622 road we drove the day before yesterday. It’s fascinating to see from here how the track winds along the mountainside. We make a U-turn at the home of the artist Samúel Jónsson – a quirky little complex.

Back in Bildudalur, we enjoy a late coffee and waffles at the museum dedicated to sea monsters!

Since the campsite is little more than a parking lot and is very exposed at a road junction, we decide to drive on to Tálknafjörður. There is a kiosk in the village selling fresh fish products, operating on the honor system. We buy some delicious fish soup – freshly bottled and still warm – and some fresh bread for dinner.

The campsite doesn't compare to the one in Þingeyri, but it has all the essentials (swimming pool, showers, toilets, and basic cooking facilities if needed); it isn't raining, so it’s a perfectly fine spot for a night or two.
