Day 09: Borgarfjörður Eystri (Bakkagerði) – Egilsstaðir

We had actually planned to do some hiking in the area, but the wind is still fierce and low-hanging clouds cling to the mountains. However, the sun is gradually breaking through.

That means everything will dry out; we pack up and set off. Basically, we want to continue heading northwest, but for now, we have to double back toward Egilsstaðir, as quite a few roads are still closed.

On the way, we spot we find an opportunity for another hike: a route along the meltwater delta down to the coast, offering magical views and numerous small, rushing cascades. The "beach" is pitch-black, made of the finest lava rock.

About 10 km, two and a half hours – simply wonderful.

We’ll stock up on supplies in Egilsstaðir; who knows what the villages ahead will have to offer over the next few days? For simplicity’s sake, we’re spending another night at the campsite we already know. After all, we’ve got time!

One thing is really odd: the photos on our iPhones sometimes show the time for Iceland and sometimes for the Faroe Islands. Consequently, the chronological order is often off – today, for instance, the timeline during the hike is a complete jumble. Wolle has to do quite a bit of tinkering to correctly match the photos with the GPS data.
