Day 26: Reykhólar – Hveravik Campsite
We manage to have breakfast and pack up just before the rain sets in. Then we head north, crossing over the mountains.
At the Þorskafjardar-Þing memorial stele, we learn that German merchants were actually based here in the 16th century, prior to the Danish colonization of Iceland.
Road F608 is an easy drive, and the landscape across the plateau is beautiful. Just before rejoining the main road, we take a turn-off to the northwest (towards Kirkjuból), but the track eventually becomes too rocky for our liking. It is clearly a route that sees little traffic and receives no maintenance. We turn back and soon find ourselves on the road to Hólmavík. The campsite is decent, the pool is fine, and the shopping options are passable. We pick up a few supplies, fill up on fuel, wash the car, and decide to keep driving.
On the way to Drangsnes, we spot a campsite in Hveravík. It has a fantastic common room with a fully equipped kitchen – wow. It does come with a price tag of 42 euros, though. But the timing works out perfectly: it starts pouring rain, and we settle in where it’s warm with our crime novels and guidebooks.
We park next to Jeff and Susi from the USA, and after cooking dinner, we spend a good while chatting with Ruth and Heiko from Hamburg. The site is quite busy, and everyone is delighted with the great common room – especially since the weather remains unpleasant and chilly.
