Day 44: Mjóanes – Svínafelli Campsite

We have two days left. Meanwhile, there are storm warnings for the entire north, west, and the Highlands. So that leaves the east and southeast.

And so we head off to the glacial lagoons west of Höfn. They're a reasonable distance away and within the "fair weather zone."

Cool!

There are things that make you think, "Do I really need this, or is it just a tourist trap?" Yes, it's totally commercialized. And yes, you do need to experience it.

The glacier tongues of Vatnajökull (beneath whose ice there are supposedly seven active volcanoes) extend down into the valley almost to sea level. Impressive.

Large and small icebergs float in the Jökulsárlón lagoon, and crystal-clear pieces of ice lie on the sand (just like at the so-called "Diamond Beach"). Amazing. You could gaze at it forever.

Lake Fjallsarlön is smaller and not quite as photogenic in terms of color, but you can see the glacier and its calving face better. We're considering booking a boat tour after all. It's too late for today, and the light would be better in the morning anyway. So we're spending the night about 40 minutes further west. Svinafelli was recommended to us by Sandra, next to whom we camped last night, as well as by the boat tour operator.
