Day 06: Egilsstaðir – Vök Baths – Bakkagerði

It’s raining, so we have breakfast in the campsite kitchen, just like many others.

We meet Edmund from Singapore and Paul from Canada; both are traveling by motorcycle.

Our first stop today is the wonderful Vök Baths – geothermal pools on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn near Egilsstaðir. We spend nearly three hours in the hot water, cooling off in the lake every now and then – so soothing!

Unfortunately, the campsite north of Route 1 (Guesthouse Svartiskógur) isn't the best spot; it’s a bit shady and the grass is wet. So, we move on to Bakkagerði in the northeast. The views of the snow-capped mountains are spectacular, and we arrive at the Álfaborg Campsite around 6:00 PM. It’s a lovely location.

Although it’s cold and windy, the long hours of daylight are a huge advantage. It’s no problem to cook a meal in the evening or even read in bed at 10:30 PM! And having a heater in the evening is a real bonus!
