Day 21: Grundarfjörður – Arnarstapi
We spend a little more time paying homage to the cult of "THE MOUNTAIN" – including the amusing selfies taken by many Asian tourists – before heading west.
Unfortunately, the mountain road to the Snæfellsjökull glacier isn't passable yet; we had somehow miscalculated that. So, we only catch a distant glimpse of the ice – but still, it’s something.
We make a quick detour to the Bugsfoss waterfall and a stopover in Ólafsvik (which has a nice little campsite with a communal kitchen).
Hellissandur is home to the national park visitor center, another nice little campsite, and a tiny café that is absolutely packed. We drive on.
The lighthouse at the tip is a bit ordinary, so we skip it.
Then, a short hike rewards us with great views of two rock pinnacles (Lóndrangar) – legend has it they are part of an ancient troll cathedral :-)
We’re spending the night in Arnarstapi. It’s spacious with a lovely view, not too crowded, and features a pretty new building with toilets and showers.
After dinner, we take a walk along the coast, just like many other tourists.
