Day 40: Djupidalur – Mývatn
Heading northeast to escape. The weather is a bit more stable there – and hopefully less wet.
We’re also rescheduling our ferry. We’ll be heading back next week – after seven weeks, which marks the halfway point we originally planned for.
We’re frustrated. But also a bit conflicted.
The country is amazing, and on beautiful days, it’s enchanting. The people are nice, and life here is certainly different from the "mainland." But the weather simply hasn't cooperated often enough so far. We’ve barely been able to cook or sit outside. We’ve done far too few hikes. Everything is incredibly expensive, and in touristy areas, you sometimes feel a bit ripped off (take the price-to-performance ratio at campsites, for example). We were already a bit wary of the tourist crowds in the south – which we’re now simply skipping. Brigitte just regrets missing out on Diamond Beach and the Highlands. Otherwise: we aren't exactly ticking off a "must-see" bucket list... It’s been great just as it is.
Now we’ll see what to do with the remaining week – starting with today’s stop in Mývatn.
