Day 37: Tálknafjörður – Breiðavík

An Icelandic summer day! A bit of sunshine, not too cold, and little wind :-)

We make a couple of stops – one at the "Fresh Fish Self Service" and another at the supermarket. The selection of fruit and vegetables was rather dismal, though that’s understandable given that Iceland has to import most of these products. We realized that there are (almost) no honeybees here, and consequently, no honey. What you *can* buy is mostly the sticky stuff in a tube meant for sweetening tea.

Látrabjarg is the westernmost tip of Iceland – and, if you leave the Azores out of the equation, the westernmost point of Europe. The drive there served as our final "fjord journey," offering a look back at all the headlands we had traversed over the past few days.

The cliffs are spectacular. You can see puffins, gulls, and razorbills – accompanied by a distinct soundscape and, inevitably, a certain olfactory element.

We hiked along the cliffs but managed only a third of the distance suggested in the guidebook. It was a bit of a "come on, let's just do the next peak and see what's on the other side" kind of situation...

We really like the campsite in Breiðavík, so we decided to stay for the night. It’s great to find actual beaches in this part of the country.
