Day 05: Arrival on Iceland in Seyðisfjörður and driving to Egilsstaðir
Iceland appears on the horizon – gray, cold, and snow-capped. This should be interesting...
We face no inspections upon disembarking, even though we tried to more or less stick to the import regulations (10 kg of food per person, limited alcohol, no fresh dairy or meat products).
Seyðisjöður is tiny and the campsite unappealing, so we stick to our plan of making our first stop in Egilsstaðir.
One campsite no longer exists, and the second – which Wolle has visited before – is still closed, so we stay at the site right in town. It’s perfectly fine.
The day stays more or less dry, so we take walks to the supermarket, through the town, and finally through the "forest" – a small local recreation area with nicely laid-out paths. It’s fun and does us good.
Cooking outside in the cold (8°C) takes some getting used to. It feels like ages for the pasta water to boil. It’s all the nicer, then, to be able to sit inside and run the heater.
Our first impressions: It warms up quickly, but it is quite noisy.
Not ideal for sleeping, though; we end up getting out our old, thick down sleeping bag to use as an extra blanket.
