Omutuku – Spitzkoppe
When leaving Omutuku we meet Thomas (who collects the 800 N$ from us) and Hannes' neighbors, who are checking on things.
They report that there are still many poachers, although the number of animals has decreased significantly during the years of drought. At least we see two giraffes on the way back to the D2315, which, as it happens very often, just show up from nowhere.
After leaving the Erongo area, we head south and soon can see the Spitzkoppe, an impressive massif. Although not particularly high at around 1,700 m, but individually towering around 600 m in the landscape. Despite New Year's Eve, we easily get a wonderful campsite located somewhere in the middle of the huge boulders that lie around as if they were placed by purpose. A great and spacious site.
Unfortunately, we have a flat tire on the left rear – but we quickly find help from a young man at the gate who removes the tire very routined and finds the hole very quickly. The repair is done in half an hour and for 150N$.
We have a late sandwich lunch at the restaurant, drive to our campsite to wash some clothes and then take a trip around the Spitzkoppe – only by car because of the heat (35 degrees). On the way back we make a detour to the showers and return to the campsite in time so that we can glide into the evening with cooking and a campfire in the low light. The white wine bought in the "Restaurant" is drinkable, but nothing more – unfortunately the winery near Omaruru was closed. Fantastic light, peace, a little fire in the great fireplace, stars – what more could you ask for.
