Tanzania
Coming from Rwanda, our second leg of Tanzania begins again at Lake Victoria and takes us further east to the Indian Ocean.
Prices in national parks are ridiculously high for foreigners, especially for self-drivers. Crossing the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater with an overnight stay would easily cost over €1,000. But we've already had many amazing animal encounters. And since it's very touristy here (with packs of safari vehicles), we just enjoy the scenery.
Besides the two large lakes, we also have good weather and see the two large mountains, Mount Meru (4,566 m) and Kilimanjaro (5,895 m).
Tanzania reminds us a bit of the west coast. We can't quite put our finger on why it seems more backward than Uganda and Rwanda. It's probably a mixture of impressions: donkey carts, tuk-tuks, bad roads, somewhat carelessly constructed houses without any "frills", lots of garbage, lots of people who seem to have nothing to do, drinking water that's been lugged from far away. And the attitude of squeezing maximum money out of every foreigner. We're a bit tired of the dirt and the haggling.
