Khowarib Gorge – Twyfelfontein

In the morning we take a short walk along the river to the source area and have a little chat with Petronella, a cheerful Damara woman who speaks the best English and even gives us a little singing performance. Like everyone here, she complains of drought and water shortages. But she thinks tourism is good, because it brings income to the country.

In the morning at breakfast we saw a yellow-billed toko, which unfortunately is very, very photo-shy. It makes a great sound that lives up to its name. Leo did a nice video of him (turn on sound on your device!).

The trip to Twyfelfontein again leads through breathtaking landscapes: table mountains, small green trees, giraffes along the way, later sand and dunes.

We decide to have lunch in the Twyfelfontein Lodge. Afterwards we drive to the entrance of the World Heritage Site to clarify how it works with the guided tours to the rock paintings. Starts from 8 a.m. in the morning, 40 Namibian dollars for parking, a 5-minute walk to the reception, then 100 Namibian dollars per person, for whom a guide is assigned for around 45 minutes. We decide that it is too hot to do the walk today and look for a campsite.

We spend the rest of the day in the shade. In the evening we climb up a rocky hill nearby the campground for a sundowner with a spectacular backdrop.
