Botswana
Botswana is pure safari tourism. We start in the Central Kalahari, look at the rock paintings in Tsodilo Hills. We fulfill a dream and fly over the Okavango Delta in a small helicopter and visit the Chobe National Park.
Elephants everywhere, sometimes very close. Hippos, lions, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, various antelopes, annoying baboons and wonderful birds. We can hardly get enough of this amazing experience.
We spend the night at campsites, some of which are absolutely simple and feel like wild camps; and at urban sites, which are more touristy.
You shouldn't think about the prices, park fees and pitches in the parks are completely overpriced. But that is part of Botswana's tourism strategy: it is not the individual traveler and certainly not the overlander with his own car who is of interest, but the wealthy tourist who brings a lot of money and books as part of a package. Average length of stay 5 days. Fly in, see the highlights, stay in luxury lodges.
We also booked some places in advance for the national parks, but our experience is that things can usually be arranged on site. Except for Savuti in the south-western Chobe.
We drive on deep sand, bumpy roads, gravel, something is constantly coming loose, everything is dusty.
We love the starry sky and the peace and quiet in secluded places and then have to get used to the cities of Maun and Kasane again.
All in all: it's really a lot of fun!
