Lesotho

Lesotho is breathtaking. And completely different from everything we have seen in Africa so far.

It is about the size of Belgium, no point is below 1,000 meters in altitude, and for the first time we are driving a car over passes of around 3,000 m. A fascinating landscape. But cold: we have night temperatures between five and zero degrees.

Most people live from agriculture. A laborious business with oxen on terraced areas. However, we see a lot of livestock, cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys. It seems as if everyone has a living and a small house.

Around a third of the population is under 15 years old, only 5% are our age.

We are tempted by the beautiful landscape, the photogenic villages, the proud and self-confident people with their picturesque clothing to forget that Lesotho is also very poor. That there are problems with drugs and HIV; that many people have to earn their money in the mines in South Africa; that Lesotho has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

Despite all the ambivalence: We are deeply impressed.
