Hamburg – Kyffhäuser

Around noon we leave. We didn't really plan the route. I still have a route that I did ride in 2019 on the way to southern Germany, with the destination of Kyffhäuser, a monument to Wilhelm I. There is a campsite near a water reservoir where I have stayed overnight .

The ride from Hamburg on the country road past Wolfsburg is not particularly exciting. In Quedlinburg we take a break around 5pm to have dinner. The very first restaurant, which we head for with the help of Google, has nice seats in the inner courtyard and offers quite tasty trout.

Then we continue through the southern Harz on winding routes towards Kebra, near which the water reservoir – an artifical lake – is located. After a few hours of riding, the cornering demands a lot of concentration, especially for Leo. I remember wobbling around corners on the bike in the beginning. Leo is doing already much better thanks to all the experience he had in his youth. But it is clear that it is much more strenuous for him than for me.

We arrive at the campsite in time for reception opening hours and check in. We treat ourselves to a campsite with a view of the reservoir, which has very low water due to the intervention of bird watchers, as we learn the next day. Apparently the area is an important resting place for cranes, although they do not pass through until later in the year and these are said to have enough wading area to forage. The ornithologists are in constant dispute with the tourism companies, of course.
